In Austria, there are three different models for implementing the joint use of one or more energy generation plants. Since 2017, several people who use a shared grid connection (e.g. multi-party houses) have been able to produce and jointly utilize electricity as part of a joint generation system.
Since 2021, several people have been able to produce, store, consume and sell energy across property boundaries.
Two forms of cross-property communities are possible: the locally restricted "renewable energy community" and the "citizen energy community", which is geographically unrestricted within Austria.
