Private 5G

A wireless network that provides dedicated and secure connectivity for a specific organization or location.

Private 5G is a wireless network that provides dedicated and secure connectivity for a specific organization or location. It uses the same technology as public 5G networks, but is built exclusively for a single user or organization. Private 5G networks can be highly customized to meet the specific needs of the user or organization.

With a private 5G network, a company can optimize its operations, reduce downtime and improve overall productivity. At the same time, the private 5G network provides secure and reliable wireless connectivity. A company's sensitive data is protected and smooth and efficient operations are ensured. In addition to the use of private 5G in healthcare, there are other use cases of private 5G such as manufacturing facilities and transportation.

Which segments are addressed?

Private 5G is aimed at customers who require maximum availability and independence in their wireless communication. Particularly relevant for critical infrastructures where important processes are based on wireless networks, these systems also offer decisive security benefits for employees.

  • Manufacturing industry - high-availability data transmission

Private 5G supports the trend towards flexibilization in the manufacturing industry and enables highly available, reliable data transmission between machines (M2M) with low latency times. The possible applications are diverse: thanks to 5G, production lines can be flexibly networked, while mobile robots can be controlled via a secure communication channel. High-resolution images and videos can be transmitted easily and graphical information systems or ERP systems can be conveniently accessed across the entire factory site via mobile tablets. Mobile devices such as barcode scanners and RF-ID solutions also support the optimization of logistics processes.

Another advantage is the efficient radio coverage within production halls and the optimized coverage of outdoor areas.

  • Healthcare - future-proof communication infrastructure

Mobile voice communication is essential in medical facilities - both in day-to-day operations and in emergencies. At the same time, modern communication devices have to do more today: they need to transmit broadband data, offer an up-to-date operating system such as Android and enable the use of mobile apps.

Private 5G meets these requirements and offers a future-proof digitalization platform that ensures highly available and secure communication in critical areas. This creates an efficient, reliable and flexible communication infrastructure.

  • Airports - ready for take-off with a reliable communication network

At airports, numerous departments and people work closely together to ensure that flight handling runs smoothly. Reliable mobile voice and data communication, which must be available throughout the airport building as well as in outdoor areas, is crucial for this.

Private 5G provides a unified platform for voice and data communication. Professional 5G terminals enable push-to-talk group communication, while data applications support the efficient handling of business processes. As a result, private 5G replaces older narrowband radio systems such as TETRA while providing a secure and robust data connection that meets the requirements of modern airports.

  • Ports - optimized processes

Private 5G replaces conventional radio technologies such as analog radio, DMR and TETRA for voice communication and offers significantly better radio coverage of large outdoor areas for data communication compared to WLAN.

The result: faster handling of ships, automated routine tasks and increased throughput. All of this contributes to a significant increase in operational efficiency in the port, making processes run more smoothly and effectively.

What are the advantages of the solution?

Local autonomous operation

In a critical environment, it is crucial that the communication system functions autonomously. This means that voice and data connections must remain reliable even if the site is cut off from the rest of the world.

High availability

Due to the central role of the communication system for ongoing operations, these systems are usually designed redundantly and connected to the emergency power supply.

Integration into local IT andtelecommunicationssystems

The mobile devices are seamlessly integrated into the IT environment so that they can access the internal systems directly. For voice applications, the 5G end device is connected directly to the private branch exchange, enabling calls between 5G devices, desk sets and the public network.

Robust 5G radio coverage

In contrast to license-free technologies such as DECT or WLAN, 5G uses licensed radio spectrum that is not interfered with by other users or services. While WLAN is intended for stationary applications, 5G is specifically designed for mobile use and enables a seamless transition between radio cells without interruptions. In addition, the more powerful radio interface offers greater efficiency, which means that fewer cells are required.

Professional end devices

Private 5G takes advantage of the rapid development in the smartphone market. Professional devices are also based on Android and offer practical functions such as removable batteries, charging cradles and barcode scanners. Android gives you access to a wide range of applications. Mobile device management enables the central administration of devices, and the intuitive operation of Android requires no special training.

Future and further development of 5G

The standardization and further development of the mobile communications standard are ongoing processes. Release 15 of 3GPP, completed in 2019, was the first 5G version and focused on increasing bandwidth. New 3GPP releases appear approximately every two years and bring improvements and enhancements. The successor 6G is expected to be introduced with Release 20 in 2030. An investment in 5G technology is future-proof, as new products build on and support existing releases.

CANCOM is also involved in 5G research. Together with Silicon Austria Labs, Magna, Liwest and Arico Technologies, we are researching the practical implementation of private 5G in the industrial environment.
